The catch: higher-MERV filters add resistance to airflow, and a system not sized for that resistance can strain the blower or lose efficiency. Whole-house filtration / media cabinet
A larger, deeper media filter cabinet mounted at the air handler holds more filter surface area than a standard 1-inch slot, so it can hit MERV-13-or-higher filtration without the same airflow penalty. It's a bigger job — usually a retrofit to the ductwork near the air handler — but it's the difference between "smoke season workaround" and a system actually built to filter finer particles long-term.
Portable HEPA air purifiers
True HEPA units are excellent for a bedroom or the room you spend the most time in, and need zero changes to your HVAC system. What they don't do is filter the whole house — air in other rooms, and air moving through your ducts, goes right past them.
Fresh-air intake and economizer settings
Some systems — more common in newer or higher-end installs — have a setting that pulls in outside air on purpose for ventilation.
